Hold the Phone, Haleakala Cabins Lottery Gone: Maui Camping Gets Better

Where: Maui || Grouped in: Maui Nature || Tagged:

One o the primo destinos in all of Hawaii for camping has long been Haleakala Crater on the island of Maui. Alas, the hadnful of cabins operated by the National Park Service have long been next to impossible to nail down. The NPS had been running a reservation lottery for the cabins that made it very hard not only to get a date but also to match dates and schedules. NPS has joined the 20th century by allowing phone reservations for the cabins at last. Reservations can be made from 1–3 p.m. (Hawai'i time), seven days a week, by calling 808-572-4400. This is a world-class camping / cabin experience and if you are willing to book way, way out, I'd highly recommend it.

Thanks for uncovering this juicy tidbit Alex! I am re-inspired to go camping. I hiked in there 20 years ago, and my memories are alive and well.

I’d love to stay at the Paliku cabin this coming week but I am only one person and all nights are reserved - any idea if it is possible to request one of the 12 beds - surely not every bed is taken every night.
