Hawaii Hotels: Ilikai Hotel Shutting Down in Feb, Bankrupt
Where: Oahu || Grouped in: Oahu Hotels || Tagged:
The Ilikai is one of the older hotels in Waikiki and never one of my favorites -- no easy beach access, set on a busy street, very boxy architecture, low ceilinged rooms. But it seemed destined for brighter times with redevelopment led by local guy Brian Anderson. Now it's all going away -- Anderson missed payments, lost the hotel, now to be closed by bankruptcy court receiver. More job losses. Fewer rooms but no shortage of space at the inn in Hawaii these days.

It’s my first time to hear about this Hotel. Nevertheless it’s still sad to read that it’s closing - more job losses, not good.

It is a shame to hear it is closing, but if a visit to the property will tell you something has to be done. It looks like H-E double L! The issues at the Ilikai run deeper than Mr. Anderson, the property is too segmented.

I had been going to the Ilikai for thirty five years, often many times each year. Throughout its various owners the place was just terrific. Service was the best and there were so many drinking and dining areas to choose from. The new owner broke the cardinal rule by eliminating most of the dining, no room service and dividing the hotel into two parts. The main hotel lost even its main pool and unless you owned a timeshare, you had to go to the pool at the back of the hotel. For decades this beautiful old hotel thrived on return business. The owner destroyed that relationship and in just a short period of time, he is now bankrupt. It would be just great to have a new owner who might restore this grand hotel and treat customers as they had been treated for a half century.

I’ll be honest - I’ve never stayed at the Ilikai - it doesn’t really meet our hotel needs. BUT it is a landmark! People from all over the world instantly recognize it (thanks to the opening sequence from Hawaii 5-0). I do agree that it needs some help, but I think it would be a disaster of a mistake to tear it down!

Hotels are closing everywhere not just in Hawaii. I often visited San Diego and to see quite a few San Diego Hotels are closing down, what ashamed!

My wife and I were there in August of 09 and we liked it there. We would go there again next trip to Hawaii. Those things happen when we are in a recession and people can’t go on vacations. I hope that it stays in business.
