Hawaii Hotels: Lots of Luxury Rooms at the Inn, Halekulani Running Under 50%, Word on the Street

Where: Oahu || Grouped in: Oahu Hotels || Tagged:

Now might be the best time in literally 50 years for deals on luxury hotels in Hawaii. Which is good for travelers but sad for the hotels. I am hearing rumors that the higher-end properties are facing occupancies in the low double-digits for February and March. My favorite Oahu hotel, the Halekulani, is well under 50% occupancy at present, I have heard. So I imagine they will be eager to roll out some deals. Regardless, have a drink or dinner down there if you can. They need it.

I was shopping around for Kamaaina rates yesterday at some of the island’s top hotels and Halekulani quoted me a rate of $340/night…doesn’t seem too discount, does it? The Westin Moana Surfrider, by contrast, has a nice Kamaaina rate of only $189, which includes early check-in, late check-out, discounts on food, AND free parking.

It always takes Hawaii luxury hotels quite some time to offer lower rates like 50% off, even when they are suffering and not busy. Remember this is our high travel season in Hawaii.

Hawaii vacation rental owners are acting a little faster with offering discounts. We at Best Hawaii Vacation blog expect great vacation rental deals for Spring 2009. Currently, most of the Hawaiian rental hosts are booked. Good for them but slow spring season is ahead!

Evidence that the market will self correct to demand. Hotel cost adjustments should be good for tourism.

We’ve been to Hawaii twice now, and love it. We keep up with the news there, and thought we would visit again given the tourist troubles. But, we were very sad to discover that prices were even higher now than they were last time we were there (september/october 2008). We would love to help out but we cant afford to! We have, however, been ordering more made in Hawaii food products. We’ve been trying to convince out local grocery co-op to carry some of the products too, but no success yet.

By the way, while the Halekulani is a beautiful hotel, at $1,000+ a night, we won’t be staying there any time soon. If they need help making it thru these tough times, they need to offer rooms to the rest of us.

For our money the Park Shore Waikiki can’t be beat. It’s cheap, has a great view of the ocean, the park, and Diamond Head. The staff are friendly, the place isn’t snobby, and you don’t have to stare at other hotels from your lanai (if you get an ocean view room or suite).

Unfortunately, the hotel business is suffering. Vegas now is also in trouble quite a bit, you can get incredible deals on those Las Vegas Casino Hotels. Hawaii has always been a bit too expensive for me, I guess this is a perfect time to take advantage of the low rates.
