Hawaii Beaches: Proposed Smoking Ban for Waikiki Beach

Where: Oahu || Grouped in: Oahu Nature || Tagged:

There's nothing that turns me off more than walking through the warm sand in Waikiki and wandering through a cloud of cigarette smoke as some tourist lights a butt and then ruins it for everyone nearby. Call me a smoke Nazi but I think smokers should just stay off the beach. Now it appears I am not alone, as the Hawaii State Legislature has introduced legislation to ban smoking on Waikiki Beach. This is a gutsy move, considering the nosedive in Japanese tourism -- and those Japanese tourists spend a lot more than others. Kudos, Leggies!

I don’t think the move is risky. I don’t really believe that anyone is going to cancel their trip because they heard they were not allowed to smoke on a small section of beach. It would be a great move for families visiting - I know I hate to walk my child thru a cloud of smoke. And all those butts just wash right into the ocean. I applaud Oahu.

We used to be a free country. I don’t smoke and don’t care to be around people who do smoke, however, have you considered the magnitude of government encroachments on our freedoms over the last 40 years. If you don’t like smelly things, why not make it a law that people with body odor can’t use the beach either.

Oh, yes they will! It’s already difficult enough to find a smoking room in a Honolulu hotel, and the restrictions at the outdoor areas of the airport, where the trade winds blow through, are ridiculously restrictive!

Smoking on the beach does not cause harm of second-hand smoke exposure to people. So this is not a health measure. It is a littering issue, so why not impose HUGE finds for those inconsiderate people who drop their cigarettes on the beach? (And also fine the non-smokers who leave their garbage there too!)

Tourism is STRUGGLING in Hawaii with the current economic situation. Do you really want to further alienate the 25% of the traveling public who smokes?

We are planning a trip to Waikiki this August. We are addicted chain smokers, currently saving money for this trip, not having money for food, new clothes nor alcohol. I can guarantee for both of us, we WILL cancel our trip if smoking is not allowed. We are not paying all this money, so I have to give up my favorite habit while im on the beach.
smoking wont kill you, unprotected sex will.
