< Seems the very
loud Coqui frogs have reached the Big Island of Hawaii and gotten pretty settled there. Hawaii State wildlife officials estimate the coquis now inhabit at least 60,000 acres on the Big Island, although mostly in the Hilo and Puna regions. Few have made it up to the mega resorts in the
Waikoloa and
Kohala area. This frog packs a verbal wallop, so much so that one parked outside your balcony can possibly ruin your vacation. Good to ask properties point blank before you book, are you having any coqui problems? And, to be sure, if a little loud frog can ruin your Hawaiian vacaation perhaps you shouldn't bother to come anyway. :).

Dude: Have you ever tried to sleep among chorusing coquis? I stayed at a B&B in Hilo that was awash in coquis. They provided earplugs, which did zip. Even with all the windows closed, the noise was unbelievable. The B&B owner says she’s gotten used to it, and even now likes it. Of course, she’s half deaf (not kidding). They start up well before sunset and go all night until well after sunrise. If you’re not prepared for it, it’s unconscionable. Definitely a deal breaker when choosing a hotel.
