Big December: Kona Surf Film Festival at Mauna Lani Bay
Kona local Chad Campbell founded this friendly fest in 2003 as a way to bring together the Big Island’s surfing community and to get stoked on an international array of surf flicks. Apparently, he succeed because eight years later the fest is going strong. Each December Chad, his family and friends, put on the festival on the sunny Kona Coast at the stunning Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows where showing under the stars draw large crowds of happy surfers. The Festival strives to give independent filmmakers a forum to showcase their work to a warm audience eager to soak up big tubes, big spills, great stories, eye-popping visuals, travelogues, and rockin’ soundtracks. As part of its mission, the Fest has raises funds for various Big Island charities including Kulana Huli Honua, Protect Kohanaiki Ohana, and the Surfrider Foundation Kona Chapter.
