Best Places to Learn to Surf in Hawaii: Inside Puaena Point on the North Shore of Oahu
The vast majority of people who learn to surf in Hawaii do so in Waikiki, the zany tourism Mecca on the southern shore of Oahu. A handful make the drive out to White Sands / Barbers Point where gentle rollers kiss the shores but the rides are not as long as in Waikiki. Those in the know, however, head out to country (aka the North Shore), rent a board in Haleiwa Town, and get wet at a break called Inside Puaena Point. The waves there are gentle except when the North Shore is completely cranking (you’ll know when that happens). It’s an easy paddle out from the sandy, shady beach which is easily accessible. Parking is never a problem in the neighboring county park. After the session ends, you can score shave ice in Haleiwa, go to Kua Aina for a bodacious burger, or hit the Blue Lagoon (our little secret) for a leisurely dip. By all means – surf twice in the same day if you have to. As you can see from the pic, dads love to teach their kids how to surf here. You’ll love it, too.
