The ultimate tropical itch on a hot summer day is shave ice. No, it’s not a sno cone, either, although there are similarities. Locals crave shave ice in all flavors and combinations. We eat with sweet adzuki beans, topped with sweetened condensed milk, and smushed with ice cream. David and Ululani own this three store mini-chain and have gained a rep for putting out first rate shave ice, from perfectly shaved ice flakes to natural syrups made from premium purees and Maui-only sugar. All toppings are locally made or sourced when possible. Our fave flavor combo? The Local Motion, natch – mango, li hing mui, and succulent pineapple – topped with sweet and zingy li hing mui powder.
