Flower Power on Maui: Ali’i Kula Lavender
Ali’i Chang took a distinctive flower, planted fields full of it in the cool Upcountry Maui fields, and the people came. Chang, who passed away in April, was also a master marketer and merchandiser but the shockingly wide range of lavender-based or scented products made by the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm team illustrate how far a single good smell can go without getting boring or stale. The line spans aromatherapy, bed and bath products, candies and cooking products, and even pet products! Some of our faves? Putting lavender love on your steak, in your salad dressings and other places with a full line of Kula Ali’i seasonings and salts (pictured here). Then again, chocoholic may opt for the lavender flavored chocolate bars made with Belgian dark chocolate. The farm puts on copious special events including lavender tea services, lavender wreath and bouquet making, and standard foodie farm tours for those curious about how to grow the stuff. The whole thing is slightly over the top but in a really great way. Enjoy.
