The Quiet North Shore of Maui: Haiku Plantation Inn
In the cool quiet of the lush North Shore environs of Ha’iku stands a classic plantation home built in the 1870′s for Maui’s first sugar plantation doctor. A time machine back to old Maui? Perhaps. The owners have maintained most of the original architecture of the place and the historic grounds. Today Ha’iku is a quiet country town people with artists, windsurfing vagabonds, and local families living the country life. The Inn is a short walk to town and a far easier drive either to Hana or towering Haleakala. Of course, the world’s best windsurfing beaches are a stone’s throw from Haiku, as is funky Paia with its cool shops and laid-back ways. The hotel is decorated in period piece Hawaiiana with floral patterns galore and loads of endemic woods like koa. But it sure feels like hom after a day of driving, hiking, surfing, or swimming, the gentle breezes in Ha’iku do wonders for the constitution – just what the doctor ordered.
